About Senior Home Repair

Life Management has been administering Residential Maintenance Services, known as the Senior Home Repair Program of Essex County for twenty-three years. The Program is funded by the Essex County Division of Senior Services via funds from the Safe Housing and Transportation Program, as well as from Title IIIB and Title IIIE of the Older Americans Act. In 2023, Life Management was also granted one-time funds via the American Rescue Plan, in order to provide additional seniors with home repairs during our difficult economic times. Thanks to Essex County’s commitment to older adults, senior homeowners and caregivers can obtain free assistance with *minor carpentry, electrical, and plumbing repairs. Qualified homeowners are also able to obtain smoke detectors, ramps, grab bars, railings and chair lifts.*Minor repairs include, but are not limited to: the repair of leaks, steps, windows, doors, locks, ceilings, light fixtures and outlets. Drains and toilets can be unclogged. Boilers and air conditioners can be installed and serviced so that seniors can remain comfortable and safe as they maintain their independence in the community. The goal of the Senior Home Repair Program is to help older adults, age 60 and over, and caregivers, to maintain their independence while living safely and securely in the community. Services are targeted to seniors and caregivers living on fixed incomes, who are often living in crime ridden areas, and forced to neglect repairs needed in their homes in order to financially meet their basic needs. Seniors often find themselves vulnerable to scam artists who take down-payments for repairs and home improvements and never return. Older adult homeowners may ignore repairs because they choose to use what little funds they have for food and medications. The Senior Home Repair Program helps to remedy some crucial, non-cosmetic repairs to help older adults live safely and securely in their homes while aging in place.
